On the very rare occasion, my computer will lock up while watching YouTube or playing a 3D game. I was playing on my hardcore map earlier, and it locked up. After restarting, my game is no longer listed, but the files seem to still be intact.
Why is the game no longer listed? And can it be recovered in a way that will preserve the contents of my backpack?
If you are still having issues, create a New World, with the same seed (if you know it), level options, etc; then Save & Quit.
Open your Minecraft Launcher, and press "Edit Profile", then "Open Game Directory", then open the "saves" folder. There, you should see folder names which resemble both the Name of your New World and the old and 'corrupt' one.
Open the new World's folder, in it should be a "level.dat" file, copy that, then go back to the "saves" folder, and open the 'corrupt' save folder. In it, should be another 'level.dat' file, rename it to 'level_old.dat', then paste the level.dat you previously copied into the folder.
Afterwards, reopen Minecraft, and you should see the old World. Open it, and you will be spawned in a random place, but the same map.
You should be able to work with the save from there.

Hi,
If your computer unexpectedly died, and your Minecraft world suddenly no longer works, try loading it (the world) in MCEdit, and resaving the world.
This is known to sometimes fix the problem.
MCEdit can be found at http://is.gd/rnBfkU.
