I need someone to do an experiment for me, as i cannot do it myself.
please, if someone has the old launcher, the new launcher, and the new .minecraft file, backup your .minecraft, backup the new launcher, delete the new launcher, and then see if the new .minecraft works on an old launcher, and will let you play in 1.7. if anyone is willing to try, please pm me with the results or if you need me to clarify. thank you for your time.
I cant imagine the old launcher would not work for 1.7 but what would the point of this be? Why not just play Minecraft 1.7 in the new launcher as its intended to be? The new launcher is awesome.

because the new launcher requires runtime 1.6.0, which i can not obtain, as i cannot install it due to not having admin password
If you use the old launcher with the newer files, the game will launch, but it will overwrite the minecraft.jar, making the version 1.5.2, and if you play on any of your worlds they will be corrupted because of new content from 1.6.
You will have to install "runtime 1.6.0" (Java probably) and use the current launcher for everything to work right.
