I've been playing Minecraft for ~2 years on a laptop with 8gb RAM.
Since the new launcher was available, I've used the following 'JVM Arguments' in my profile "-Xmx2G".
I played last night with no issues.
I have not updated or changed anything on my computer to do with Java.
I have not installed any new programs.
This morning, when I click 'Play' in the launcher, I immediately get "ERROR: COULD NOT CREATE THE JAVA VIRTUAL MACHINE."
If I take away the JVM Arguments, it works fine.
Does anyone know what could be happening here? It seems like suddenly my machine can't allocate the 2gb that it used to.
I double-checked diagnostic on the RAM and all 8gb seem to be working fine.
I also checked the task manager for running programs and don't see anything new chewing up RAM.
It sounds like you only have 32-bit Java, or Minecraft is trying to use 32-bit Java.
First, uninstall all versions of Java through Programs and Features (Add/Remove Programs in Windows XP), then download and install Windows Offline (64-bit): http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
