I recently had my computer restored after a nasty little incident and I just re-downloaded minecraft. Problem is, my C: drive is now a backup drive that only has 50 gigs of space, and the D: drive is now the Terabyte storage drive.
The problem is, even though I try to edit the profile settings so the game saves in D: appdata folder, The versions jars stay in the C: Drive, and always install in the C: drive, even though I changed the game directory in the profile settings. I'm planning to mod the game, and have a few different versions on hand at once, so does anyone know if I can change where these .jar's are stored?
The launcher automatically install itself in the C: drive. Is this changeable? Also, a broader question: is it possible to change my D: drive to my C: drive and have that as the local drive?
You can, although I'm not entirely sure how hard it is to do. You probably will find that you have lots of other applications that don't work correctly because their registry entries point to the C: drive. So this is something that you should probably pursue.
Here's some info: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/tipstricks/f/change-drive-letter.htm
but the warning about OS partitions probably applies. Do you actually have two installs of windows? One on the original large disk and a backup image on the small disk? If so you may have just booted from the wrong disk (whatever disk you boot from is probably configured to call itself "C").
Or maybe you booted from a recovery image, but haven't yet actually recovered the large disk?
