So recently while playing minecraft, after playing for about 20+ mins or so, I notice a pretty big dip in the game's performance. I have a brand new gaming machine and have never had problems like this. Minecraft never utilizes more the 8-10% of the CPU and all of a sudden, a java process, which I thought was minecraft, was actually utilizing about 80-95% of the CPU, causing a huge frame rate drop.
After investigating a little further I discovered that the execution line for the process is actually for the game's launcher, and it can actually be killed without affecting the game if it's already running.
My question is, what is causing this? I haven't gone into too much detail with the investigation, so could it be just my machine? I can't possible imagine why the launcher would be using so much CPU time. Is it a bug, or a glitch with the current launcher?
Let me know if anyone else has had this problem. I can post screenshots if anyone needs.
I am suprised that nobody has commented here, I would have had I seen the thread earlier. I am having this exact same issue. At first i thought both Java processes were necessary but, also discovered the one using a bunch or resources was the launcher.
I saw this the other day too, but only because I was looking at my system performance. All the machines I run MC on have more than enough cores, so this bug in the launcher doesn't jump out.
You can configure the profile so that the launcher closes (exits, not just hides) when minecraft is launched.

Yes, I ironically discovered this myself right after making my previous post. Not a huge pain to change the setting but, whether this is a bug with Java or Minecraft code, it really should be fixed.
