What kind of errors do you get? (If none, try and look for "WARNING" or "SEVERE" in Development console.) Can you confirm you're using a game profile that has its Minecraft version set to 1.7.2 or Latest?

I use a mac (Lion; Version: 10.7.5) does anybody have any suggestions on how i can update?

HERE ARE THE STEPS YOU'LL NEED TO FOLLOW:
1.) Launch Minecraft *DON'T start up yet*
2.) Go to new profile and name it what you want
3.) Use Version: and select Use Latest Version or release 1.7.2
4.) Press save profile
5.) Select the newly made profile by clicking where it says Profile:
6.) Press PLAY and ENJOY!
