Are you using the new launcher?
If yes, then start it and click Edit Profile on the bottom <.
Then click on the drop down list under Use Version and click Use Latest Version at the top.
Click save profile and then click play.
If you can not find the profile buttons on the main launcher window where the Play button is then you need to go to mojang.net and download the new one.

Great. Also if you have an issue you fix by yourself in the future, remember to share for those that might have the same issue but not your level of ingenuity. Just a little something to think about.
