This is similar to my issue. No crash logs. My screen goes black when minecraft opens. Have not been able to play for a week now. I've updated everything I can think of. I've searched for virus and just can't find what is wrong with this darn thing. It seems like lots of people are suddenly having problems trying to play. I hope someone figures this out. I would like to start playing again.

It's a problem with the "new" way of Java not being part of the operating system (MacOSX Mavericks).
Oracle's java 1.7 have changed how MacOSX java-apps launch and the current Minecraft.app uses the old way.
If you right click on the Minecraft.app and choose Open Package. Then navigate through Content->Resources->Java and double click on Bootstrap.jar. This should start the Minecraft launcher.
This worked for me with only Oracles Java 1.7 (and not apple java 1.6) installed.

Well here
s my issue. I am on a brand new windows. I needed a clean .minecraft folder, so I deleted everything. .minecraft, the app too. I redowloaded it, everything was fine, I'm going through the .minecraft folder, then it hit me. There was no bin, mods, resourcepacks, or saves.
I couldn't install mods, I couldn't even play minecraft. What I am going to do though, is take the .minecraft folder from my dad's mac and transfer the files, only the ones I need. Yes we are on mavericks and windows 8.
Bye

Well i can solve the mac problem. Minecraft is open. click the minecraft icon and press command+q at the same time. Or click the apple icon in the upper left corner and press force quit. You should then be able to find minecraft and force quit it.
