Open launcher, log in if necessary. Select a profile, click "Edit Profile." Click "Use version:" and change it from "release 1.6.4" to either "release 1.7.2" or "Use Latest Version" if you want it to update automatically in the future, also. (If you choose "Use Latest Version," you might want to make sure that "Enable experimental development versions ("snapshots")" is not ticked, unless you want to use those automatically as soon as they are available.)
