So I haven't played Minecraft in months. I decided to start playing again because I have always loved the game. I click download, run, and it brings me to a window I haven't seen before. I log in, it does the downloading packages and all that junk. I exit and download a map and place it in my saves. I play the map and there seems to be blocks missing and the map was just a mess. Then, I went to the main screen and at the bottom it said Minecraft 1.5.2. Why did it not update? I tried closing Minecraft and opening it again and when I logged in it said "Updating Minecraft" and "Done" like it always does and it still said Minecraft 1.5.2. It even had the details of the new update in the log in window! Please help.
It sounds like you're using the old launcher, which only goes up to 1.5.2. Grab the new launcher from https://minecraft.net/download and use it instead.
