Cannot allocate more ram?

I have a Dell XPS 8500 with 16 GB of ram installed, and the new launcher will not allow me to allocate more than 1GB of Ram to the game.

This is the setup I am trying to do (6 GB of Ram):

This is the error I receive:

Anyone have any ideas why? a system with 16GB of ram should have no issue allocating 6 to a game

Because your screenshot clearly shows that you are using a 32bit installation of Java, and 32bit processes on windows can't be larger than 2G, and the heap is a subset of that, which means its limited to around 1.5G
