I need help. When I try to play Minecraft, I get some strange sound problems. First, there's no sound at all. Changing volume in-game doesn't help and the volume on my computer is turned on. The F3+S trick doesn't work. Then, at a random point, I hear an endless sound echo on a rapid loop. Sometimes the sound is of a menu button click, others it's the sound of a breaking block. The game runs, but the rapid echo is all I hear, even when the game is paused and even when I turn off all sound in-game. The echo plays with the sound and music sliders at 0. At this point, the F3+S trick DOES work, but only to stop the echo. After that, I'm back to where I started with no sound. This is on a clean install and is a recent problem. I had sound before, but this all started while I was installing some mods.
Also, this is only on the new launcher. A clean install on the old launcher resulted in no sound on startup, but the F3+S trick worked and I got sound working on it. I ran DxDiag and turned off hardware acceleration, so that can't be the problem. I don't know what to do. I've been playing with no sound for days and it's incredibly challenging and frustrating. If anyone can help me, I'd really appreciate it.
UPDATE: Found a partial fix. By swapping OpenAL files from 1.5.2 with ones in 1.6.4, I managed to get the sound working in one of my worlds using the F3+S trick. The victory was short-lived though, as the world soon crashed and won't load. Also, the F3+S trick now causes a crash on my other worlds. In addition, playing online automatically updates the files and puts the faulty OpenAL files back. So this is only a partial OFFLINE fix. I really need a more stable solution.
