Hi everyone, I am hoping that someone can help me with an on-going problem I've been having. I have a Mac with OSX 10.8.5 with 2.6 i7 processor and 8G of ram installed. In 1.6.5 I generally get about 65-85 FPS, and the newest snapshot (13w42a) I get roughly 42 (although I do have chunks set to 12, in 1.6- I use Normal distance and am not sure what that translates to). Also it seems that every time a performance related update comes out, I get a few less FPS . Currently I am using the default Xmx1G JVM argument, but I have also tried with 512M or 3G.
Anyway, when I press F3, I notice that Minecraft is only using about 100-150MB (regardless the Xmx setting). Here's a screenshot of a new world at spawn that was given about 2.5 min to load: http://i.imgur.com/zkcSEY4.png
Why is Minecraft using so little memory? Is this the reason I get low FPS? Java and everything is updated to the latest available. I appreciate everyone for taking time to help
Let me know if I left any important details out. I have made sure I have the latest Java and the latest Minecraft launcher. I appreciate anyones feedback.
Minecraft will use the memory that it needs. It does not have any kind of adaptive algorithm to take advantage of more or less memory (other than the explicit settings that are available under "options").
So, if it isn't using more memory, then it doesn't need it.
FPS is much more correlated to your GPUs capabilities for Minecraft's real time 3D rendering. You should try toggling Advanced Open GL on and off to see which works better for your GPU.
Thanks for the input. I usually use OpenGL on, and I tried it off and noticed a minus l-2 change in FPS. I admit the GPU in the Mac Mini (Late 2012) isn't that great (Intel HD Graphics 4000), but I thought the extra ram I put in would help. Right now in 1.6 I get about 65-85 FPS, but it can drop to 40 if loading a bunch of new chunks. Is there anything else I can do (short of installing mods)?
Sorry for being late responding, as I've got pneumonia and just starting to be rid of it. Thanks again,
Ken
MC can use more ram at times, for example if you have a large number of entities, so if MC's ram consumption was a high percentage of the max heap (Xmx parameter, 1G by default), then reconfiguring for more memory might help.
To get more FPS I'd try reconfiguring various video options, turn off smooth lighting, fancy graphics, reduce the view distance, etc. the less work rendering each 'screen' the faster it'll be done, and the more FPS you'll get.
