I fell in love with MC in 1.8 BETA. It was quite fun at the time. When 1.0 came out, I never stopped playing. Then came around 1.3, or what I call "Version that shouldn't but is named." I say this because Mojang introduced client-side servers. Basically, single player is a server, and your computer runs it. However, I want to know just how MineCraft continues to lag after many versions say they include "performance increases." If you must know, I will put my specs below. Be aware it isn't the newest of laptops and with its age has dropped to just $200, yet this game seems to be the only one with problems when out against TF2, CS:S, RCT3, No Limits (Yeah, that HD coaster game), and more.
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1 (7601.win7sp1_gdr.130801-1533)

I usually use DX 8-9 for games with that option for performance reasons.
Only has a Single core, review states: "when a program uses the CPU intensely, the speed of other applications is clearly reduced and latencies turn up."
Minecraft is definitely not being optimized for single core computers, and I wouldn't be surprised if multi-core enhancements did not reduce single-core performance.
First off, with only 2 GB of RAM, you are shooting yourself in the foot by running Win 7 x64. It is MUCH more resource heavy than the standard 32-bit version. It often uses 2GB at idle alone, but it expects that you have at least 4 GB. Assuming you aren't thrashing your page-file due to lack of RAM, those specs should run MC at a playable level if you have it fully optimized. Load up the Optifine Mod, change to fast graphics, turn on the "Smooth FPS" option, "smooth chunk loading" and also "Lazy chunk loading" If worse comes to worse...you could always load up a 1.2.5 profile in the launcher to play the pre-internal-sever version. Honestly though, you're going to be limited by that 2 GB of ram unless you add more or go back to 32 bit.

The 2GB has always haunted me, yes. However, it was 1.3 where the lag mostly started so I will stick with versions before that. However, my windows uses much less than what your saying. I often find it being the least of my problems, though it still is.
Thanks for your help everyone, with what you have told me I will try for more RAM, even though I still live on budget without cash.

Retired StaffNo, because dual core means you get to execute 2 commands per clock cycle instead of 1.
Your computer is most likely too old for Minecraft.
