I'm not actually sure what's causing this. It's not detrimental to the gameplay or anything, it's just a weird bug that I'd like to get to the bottom of.
I have a map of the area around my base on the wall in one of my storage rooms, you can see it here:
When I'm not using Optifine (which I'm not now, because I'm using the snapshots), chunks have odd loading behavior, sometimes not loading until I actually walk into them, meaning I can see through them. Several times since I added that map, I'll be walking down a tunnel I dug to my blaze farm, back toward my home portal, and the chunks ahead of me won't load...and I see this:
The only thing I can tell is that the x coordinates are close to the same, and the z coordinate is 128 off, which accounts for the distance I'm seeing it from in the nether. As I move closer, the map disappears. I don't have a map like this in the nether, so I don't know why it's showing up, and it's happened across multiple relogs and complete restarts of MC.
Anyone have any idea why it's happening?
