Whenever I download the "newest" launcher, it's still 1.6.2. My friend said his updated to 1.6.4 automatically. I haven't been able to play on my own server for a month now. What the heck, Minecraft. Suggestions? I'm on a mac by the way if it matters.
If you're able to play 1.6.2 that means you indeed do have the newest launcher. Now that you have the newest launcher you can easily configure it to play the version you want to play. Please keep in mind that the launcher and version are two different things. That's probably where some confusion arose. When you open the launcher before you click play you should click Edit Profile on the bottom left. In the middle where it says "Version Selection" there will be a drop down menu called "Use Version". Just select release 1.6.4 or Use Latest Version. Click save profile then click play. You should be good to go.
