Minecraft has worked flawless for me before up until yesterday (and I've been playing since 1.2.5. 1.6.4 has worked for me as well). Yesterday I began having weird lag problems. My CPU and Memory usage remains at a steady rate (it will shoot up to 100% CPU when the game is running, but I can still browse online just fine). Now, the whole computer slows down as soon as I hit "Play" and I can't even browse while it's trying to load.
The weird thing is, no errors pop up in the dev console. I can't copy/paste because of the lag issue, but it was loading libraries and was using mine because the etag matched? (I think that's what it said)
Things I have tried:
Run Minecraft.exe as admin (same problem, lag/no results)
Updated to latest Java/deleted old Java versions
Deleted Minecraft.exe and downloaded a fresh copy from minecraft.net
TRIED to delete my .minecraft folder but it said there was a weird I/O error 0x8007045D (I could barely make a backup file of my .minecraft folder without a few files popping up with that error...one was a .ogg file) It's only Minecraft that gives me that error too; I was able to make a backup of other non-related files with no I/O error
Tried to make a new profile to run Minecraft 1.2.5 (to see if maybe it was just a version problem, and 1.2.5 was picked at random). The launcher began downloading the version, but the progress bar froze and nothing happened.
If I exit the launcher, the Java SE Binary process is still running in Task Manager and will still hang there for a minute or two even after I hit "End Proccess." It's only AFTER that process is off of my list that my computer will allow me to do other things like browse the internet normally. And the CPU/Memory is STILL within reasonable levels.
Can anyone help? I'm a server owner and I feel useless as such when the only thing I can do is log in to the server via Mine Chat. The PC application just decided to die on me yesterday afternoon and I have no idea why
Edit: Not sure if this helps but my mediocre computer specs:
Toshiba Satellite L455
3 GB Ram / 222 GB HDD
Single core Intel Celeron processor
Windows 7 Home Premium x64
I don't know my video card without looking up but while it's nothing fancy, I was able to play the game without problems before.
Are you running any mods? This has happened to me if I don't install a mod correctly. Also reboot if you have not already.
I've rebooted several times. The only mod I should have installed are older defunct versions of Optine from before the 1.6 release. I don't think anything like that would affect it, since it wasn't a problem until yesterday :/

Try and play complete vanilla. No Optifine or any other mods. See if the problem continues.
Just out of curiosity, how do I remove mods? I know before the 1.6 launcher, forcing an update would reset the minecraft.jar, but I looked through the profile editor and saw nothing related to it.
I think the Optifine version I have is from 1.5 or 1.4 so it's severely outdated...

Thanks for your help so far :]
You go to edit profile, then select use version. Select Release 1.6.4, then save profile.
Oh, well in that case I did do that, but once I hit play...again, nothing happened :/ I let it sit there for maybe about 10 minutes of nothingness before I killed it via Task manager. Two friends of mine said they';ve had a similar problem but their game starts up after about ten minutes of nothing. Mine just hangs. I don't know if I should just let it sit there for like an hour or if something else is the problem :/
Edit: I tried deleting the .minecraft folder via CMD (with admin perms) and got the following errors:
.minecraft\assets\lang\fr_CA.lang - The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error
.minecraft\assets\lang\nn_NO.lang - The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error
minecraft\assets\sound\mob\endermen\stare.ogg - The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error

Hmm. After a re-install of Minecraft it should have fixed everything. What are you internet speeds? http://www.speedtest.net/
My in-game FPS is usually pretty horrid, around 7-10 if I'm lucky, but that's also due to my awful specs I think. My server co-owner and I are on the same network and while our server is on a dedicated host, we're still usually on at the same time. It doesn't usually affect my speed too much.
My server co-owner/better half went through my computer and fixed some of the registry files and ran a chkdsk. For whatever reason, the above mentioned files were corrupted and it was dragging my whole system down. After a chkdsk I was able to delete my .minecraft and download 100% fresh files for Minecraft. Flawless login once more.
Thank you Deadly_Porcupine for working with me on this. I hope I wasn't too confusing about it. Even though the problem is sorted, I do appreciate your help :]
