I've been playing on a W2k boxen for months, but I've lost sound in the 1.6.4 upgrade. So I decided to transfer my minecraft playing to a nice new Debian Linux boxen. Obtained the 280K Minecraft.jar file and in a fresh .minecraft directory, I ran it. I gave it plenty of time to download all the bits.
Started the jar, logged i, more downloads and then crash. Crash report below.

Yes, I do. This linux boxen has just been assembled and the GPU is an AMD/ATI Radeon HD 7790 dual head and I am using the driver specifically written for it and direct from ATI.
Done and fixed*. Thank you.
Would you know if the open source driver for this card is also okay?
Or is an "opengl" error just a general indicator of bad video drivers.
*lost my sound now, so need to chase that, Lol, it was chasing lost sound on the win2l 1.6.4 client that started all this.
AARGH, still don't have sound.
If I boot on the 686-pae linux kernel, then I can play, but without any sound.
If I boot on the AMD64 kernel, I get sound, but still have an error in the launcher when I attempt to play.
So, this is broken/solved.
I'm going to try a few options and come back on this.

You may need the BETA drivers.
http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/RadeonHD7790CatalystPerformanceDriver.aspx
It was specifically created for this video card because of problems with the general driver on this card.
Hmm, is the OpenGL error an indication of driver problems?
