First time i started to play minecraft was at 1.5.2 and a month later, i had a choice to update my minecraft to 1.6.1 and i accepted. All goes okay, no problem, until i try to enter a server and it says "outdated server" and so i got confused and worried. I started looking at my minecraft and it updated to 1.6.2 by itself and the servers i loved were at 1.6.1. 2 days later, the servers updated to 1.6.2 and i had fun again. And now my minecraft updated to 1.6.4 and i can't join my servers again! Why does my minecraft update by itself without asking me first and why don't the servers follow the update with my computer?

Open your minecraft launcher and click edit profile. Then set your version to the one you want.

Most servers don't update right away because they have plugins that need to update too. To go back and play on 1.6.2, in the corner of the launcher you can make a new Profile. Then, use the list to choose 1.6.2 as your version. Type in your profile name, then save it and go to the corner and select the profile. Then you can play as normal on your servers, and when they update just choose your old profile.

You probably selected the LATEST version to be used instead of a specific version. Select the specific version instead of the overall latest.

Yeah, like DukeTidier said, it's in your profile settings. In the part where you select which version, yours is set for "Use latest version." This means it will automatically download and use the latest version, whatever that happens to be. Any time there's an update, BOOM, you got it, without even having to try. If you want to play an older version, open up the profile editor and choose 1.6.1 (or whatever specific version you prefer) instead of simply "Latest."

Just set it to use whatever version you want instead of auto-updating. That option is there for a reason.
