I have a new laptop (Dell Latitude E6430 - Java 1.7 - 64 bit) and can't connect to any servers. My title screen shows the servers as green, but when I try to connect I immediatly get a end of stream error. I'm running 1.6.4. I created a temporary server on an old laptop and see the end of stream error on the server console as well. Other people have no issues connecting to these servers.
This is a brand new laptop and it has never been able to connect to any minecraft server. Both my old laptop and my son's laptop can connect to the same servers I am trying to connect to with this laptop through the same router and modem. I have never had this issue with any other laptop.
I never considered it might be my antivirus software. I'm running McAfee 4.6.0.3122. I didn't set up the antivirus and don't know much about it. Is there something in there that could be blocking the connection?
FYI, my firewall is turned off.

Then McAfee would be the bane of your computer. Remove it completely and see if it resolves the issue.
Unfortunately, I can’t. This is my work computer and I don’t have access to remove it. I may be able to modify some settings, but I doubt it and don’t know what to modify if I could. My old laptop was also a work computer with the same McAfee, but it was working just fine.

Retired StaffHave you tried rebooting your modem/router to rule out possible connection issues?
Can you think of anything that has been done to the computer, including recent changes that might have contributed to the issue?
If not, when did it start happening and have you faced this issue before?

My laptop is running java version…
++ java -version
java version "1.7.0_06"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_06-b24)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 23.2-b09, mixed mode)
I tried a few different versions of java and finally got it working with…
++ C:\Tools\Java\bin\java.exe -version
java version "1.6.0_45"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_45-b06)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 20.45-b01, mixed mode, sharing)
Using the command: C:\Tools\Java\bin\java.exe -jar Minecraft.exe
