The world I am playing on is two years old (started it in Sept 2011). I started it right after Beta 1.8 came out. I have spent hundreds of hours in the world and haven't got a single crash or any type of error. I saved the entire Minecraft folder and then I updated to 1.6.1. Minecraft crashed twice after updating. I also found a fake chunk error around my house. Then after I re-logged all of the hostile mobs multiplied in the thousands to where it slowed my computer slowed to a crawl. So I decided to quit playing Minecraft for a little bit to wait for the bug fixes.
Unfortunately, I stopped playing altogether until now. Anyways I got a question about the new 1.6.4 update and the bug fix for the new terrain generator. I'm wondering what is the best way to update my 1.5.2 Minecraft world. I haven't really done anything in the nether or any exploring in my world just in case their might be any terrain changes like the recent updates so I'm not really worried about losing any structures except the strongholds in the overworld. I haven't went to the end yet but I don't want to lose the ability to do so if I update to 1.6.4 or 1.7 when it comes out.
So should I wait until I update when 1.7 comes out, update to 1.6.3 (or 1.6.4) and do the bug fix manually, or can I just update to 1.6.4 and not worry about losing any structures, or any other suggestions?
And yes I've read the Minecraft wiki, the Minecraft forums, and the Mojang bug tracker regarding this issue. Thanks in advance!
I also never played with any mods or even changed my skin for that matter.
If you have thousands of entities, you can edit the world with McEdit and remove them. Other than that, the safest way to update worlds to later versions is to do it one version at a time. Skipping beta 1.9, 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, and 1.5 isn't exactly the best way to do things. Also, a few of those versions changed the terrain generation, so if you go to places that haven't been explored before, you will most likely end up with cliffs and ugly terrain.
Hmmm, I guess I didn't make myself clear enough. The world started in Beta 1.8 and I've updated the game all the way to 1.5.2 without skipping any updates. I still have my 1.5.2 Minecraft folder. I don't just mean my save folder either. I mean the entire folder to be able to run Minecraft in 1.5.2. The problems didn't start until I updated the game with the new 1.6 launcher. What I would like to know is how can I update the game from 1.5.2 to the most current stable version without causing any problems in the game especially with the structures.
About the thousands of entities problem. It was only the hostile mobs. I just turned the difficulty to peaceful and that solved that problem. But I just ended up deleting my updated 1.6.1 game. I felt there were too many errors/bugs so I was just going to wait until another version was released then update my game again. I ended up taking a two month break. Lol.
And yes my world has cliffs and ugly terrain due to changes to the terrain generator algorithms in earlier versions of the game. And yes it will most likely happen again. But I don't care since I've spent countless hours in this world anyways.

I don't know how to help you with those other problems, I think you may need to post some more details, maybe make a post on Mojira. But anyways, it sounds like you have them sorted for the time being.

Here's what you need to do:
Step 0: I'm assuming you don't have any mods installed. This is how to do with vanilla. Mods are a different story.
Step 1. update to 1.6.4
Step 2: visit any witch huts that you have already visited. When you load them into memory, 1.6.4 will re-write the save file with information that 1.7 will need. If you skip this step, those particular witch huts from old chunks will never spawn witches again.
Step 3: visit any nether fortresses that you have already visited. If you skip this step, those nether fortresses will not spawn wither skeletons or blazes (blaze spawners will continue to function though, either way).
Step 4: visit your strongholds. Use the Eyes of Ender to find them. If you skip this step, in the future your eyes of Ender may not point to the strongholds, and you will have to resort to pure chance to find them accidentally. You can also skip this step if you're sure you haven't already travelled more than 500 blocks from spawn and accidentally generated land with a stronghold under it.
Step 5 (I guess): wait until 1.7 is officially released, and update at that time.
I just saw your post. I was out of town all of this week.
Thanks for your post!. I updated to 1.6.4. Seems like everything works fine. It looks like I have a lot of exploring to do. But first I need to finish all of my unfinished projects lol.

I made my own shader pack, by the way.
