Go to try the snapshot today to find the launcher is apparently offline. Odd. I check my internet, it's on, so I try...
...rebooting the launcher
...logging in and out (can't log in since offline, can't see console either or even play now...)
...confirming internet works in a seperate application (steam and chrome)
...checking minecraft.net (online)
...checking firewalls (removed the norton that was preinstalled too!)
...redownloading the launcher
...rebooting
...launching in steam
...not launching in steam
No luck! As I said I'm locked out of the console so I can't copy the info, but it says something like "unable to download files. Check internet". I'm running a new windows 8 laptop that has run this flawlessly before.
EDIT: Creativity! I screen-capped the console while it was up.
You know how you shouldn't say "things can't get any worse"? ...I just did. I attempted a full reinstall, and it still won't connect! Now I have no minecraft at all...the only upside is the console froze and I was able to grab the full message this time.

System.getProperty('os.name') == 'Windows 8'

You might need to reinstall Java. First, go to Programs and Features in Control Panel. Uninstall everything that says Java in the name, then go to http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp and get Windows Offline (64-bit).
Reinstalled java, and updated video drivers too. Minecraft is online, dunno if it was this morning, but now and last night when I first had the issue it was online.
I believe I'm allowed to bump after 12 hours if I remember correctly. If not, scold me XD
Still having issues...despite the servers being up and all. Same message, same issue. And after several reinstalls of different software and even trying to mess with java too...
I know at this particular moment they're having a hiccup, but I've been having issues before they were having issues.
