There is an underground area that is black until I get close to it, then I can look down and see lava and areas I've explored (with torches) in it. If I look up I can see the sky, even though there is actually rock there and water at the top.
I can't go into this area. However, I was outside swimming to an island and I did go into it, I fell in and got stuck. Now I can't get out. I can't move at all in any direction.
I have the latest Java. I am playing single-player. I've closed Minecraft and re-opened. I've played in a different area for a week and come back and the area is still there. I even found it again by accident when I dug through a wall on the opposite side. Today I fell in and got stuck.
Here are screencaps from before I fell in. Help?

If your world got corrupted you can try to repair it with MCEdit. Open the offending world in MCEdit, press 'ctrl-i' and select 'Repair regions' in the dialogue which pops up. Once this has completed, save your world and exit MCEdit.
To download MCEdit, go to http://www.mcedit.net/ and choose the version appropriate for your OS.
