I have a 1200 dollar gaming computer. Not sure of the exact specs, as my dad and neighbor were the ones who ordered the parts, but I can get the specs if need be. I do know that I have at least 8 gigs of ram, but I'm pretty sure it's 16. Something like 500 gig memory, and with about 100-150 gigs left free. I close EVERYTHING except for MineCraft... No go. I have used Forge ML, MCPVP mod user, vanilla user, and I get the most FPS out of normal (about 100). However, that's on singleplayer. On multiplayer, 40 is a good day for me. In 1.5.2, I had (at the least) 120 FPS. It's only MineCraft, too! I can play Blacklight: Retribution fine, BF3 fine, etc. This is a very annoying issue.
Note: I generally do not use a modded user, however I am currently downloading Optifine.

Being able to run games that have higher graphics settings doesn't mean anything as Minecraft's having to deal with lots of blocks rather than just rendering a flat surface that has a nice shader applied to it.

If you haven't already you should install the 64bit version of Java as the 32bit version can cause you to get a bad framerate on a 64bit system.
Get the actual specs. Just saying how much it costs means nothing; for all you know, it could be 1200 in that the drives cost 900 and the rest of the system was 300.
