Greetings! I regretfully have to ask for assistance... I am a mod for a small minecraft server and recently I have been experiencing two very disturbing errors that have prevented me from playing Minecraft entirely. The first one I noticed was a strange hiccup that occurs in my system but only while running Minecraft. It happens randomly and persists even after Minecraft/Java are closed. I didn't know what to do to document this issue, so I took a screenshot of my TaskManager performance log with the hiccups and without to illustrate the difference in my system resource usage. (The graph is set to fastest updates)
This I can deal with... the computer doesn't crash, just gets a little wonky and I have to reboot to clear the issue, but rebooting has worked every time. But this brings me to the second and more recent problem:
While running minecraft my computer will freeze completely. I have had this happen about a dozen times now, every time I try to play the game. This did not happen immediately upon updating to 1.6, but soon after I updated Java to the most recent version (I think). I think the issue lies with my nVidia driver, however, because I have briefly seen an error message come on the screen a couple of times before the system stops responding. When the crash occurs, I can hear the audio suddenly distort, but it continues for a few moments all broken up. The video however freezes almost immediately, and so do all my input devices, so I cannot tab out or try to read any errors that may have come up unless they happen to take focus right away (not usually). Only once has this resulted in a blue screen error, the rest of the time it just goes totally unresponsive and I have to hit the manual reset. If anyone can tell me how to find the error logs that might have been created during these crashes I'd be happy to post them, but for now all I know how to find is my dxdiag:

I have also recently tried reinstalling Minecraft, uninstalling and reinstalling both versions of Java (32 and 64 bit) and I have updated to the latest nVidia drivers available, none of which has made any difference for this error. Since it started before updating my nVidia driver I am afraid rolling that back won't do much to help either. I am going crazy pulling my hair out... if anyone can shed some light on this I'd be incredibly grateful!
My system in a nutshell (yes I know it is a few years old):
It is extremely weird behavior... I haven't had any problems like it before now but it is happening 100% of the time. I can get into the game and play for a minute or two before it crashes, but afterward my system is completely locked up. Keyboard & mouse are unresponsive and I can't force quit, alt-tab, or ctrl-alt-del. I'm not even sure it was able to write a log for the crash, but I checked the event viewer like you said (first time I've seen this particular windows tool!) and here are the only logs that came up as errors after I cleared it and replicated the crash:

Again, the launcher works fine both with and without mods, it's only once I'm in-game that things go south... I've tried removing mods and playing competely vanilla and it makes no difference, the crash persists. This time I got around 2-3 minutes in-game before I had to hit the reset button on my tower.
Edit: Actually that was just the application log... which is what the page you linked to was specifying. However I also checked the system log and it came up with a list of these errors at the same time as the crash:

There were dozens of these... I couldn't count how many, but the only difference between them in the text was that string of digits at the end, "CMDre xxxxxxxx xxxxxxxx xxxxxxxx xxxxxxxx xxxxxxxx." Then those logs were followed by the error log saying the system did not shut down properly. I hope one of these logs is helpful!
Another thing to add... after searching some other forums on the topic I tried something else: disabling my second monitor output. While at first this seemed to work - I was able to play for several hours without any crashes - the next time I tried to do it, the crash came back within a few minutes. Clearly that wasn't a very good solution or is one that only happened to work by a fluke that one time. I am becoming a little worried that it may be a hardware issue... is there a good way to test for that kind of thing? If so, it's probably in my video card or (hopefully not) my motherboard.
This is the same drivers I am already using... but I just tried the beta ones also at your suggestion and still no change. Bluescreen crash (though I never see the blue screen as my display freezes or shuts off before it has a chance to come up). This time I had music playing in the background and it took the music a good 5 seconds or so to freeze after I lost my picture.
Alright, so one last development that I hadn't yet taken into account... and I'm sorry to say this but I think I've just ruled out Minecraft as being related to my crash. On a whim, I decided to test a different game, just because I have been playing a lot of Minecraft lately and I didn't remember when the last time I played another one was... before or after I started getting this bug. Turns out it must have started after because I loaded up Portal 2 and the same thing happened. After around 2 min of playing the system crashed and I had to hard reset.
I do still appreciate any advice you can give me even though this turns out to not be a Minecraft problem... I'm going to start by trying to google some utilities to use to test my system hardware and see if I can root out the cause there. If you've got any thoughts in that department, I could use them! But for the time being it looks like I won't be playing any PC games...
Final Edit:
Well... Not long after making this post my computer died. Flat out dead. Won't boot up anymore. Obviously I was right to be concerned for my hardware... problem is I have no idea what broke, and now that I can no longer boot it up into windows, I don't know how to run any tests on it!

Win 7 Ultimate x64 (SP1)
ASUS P6T Mobo
Intel i7 920 @ 2.67GHz
NVidia GeForce GTX 275
6GB DDR3 OCZ
SilverStone 700W PSU
Hi,
Does it freeze on opening the launcher or after you press Play?
If it's the launcher, I already know why.
Otherwise, that is weird behaviour.
Please post the output of the Event Log.

Hi,
Please install this driver update, if it fails to work, try the beta drivers.
