This is weird, and it's been happening for a while. I have a simple iron farm; a village with 12 houses, each with 4 doors and a villager, arranged in a square with an 18x18 space in the middle (a walkway around the edge and a 16x16 space for the golems to spawn). When I'm in the area of this village on any difficulty setting other than peaceful my memory usage rises rapidly, shooting up from wherever it starts from to around 20 or 30% more, then it drops back down to where it started from and does it again, over and over. I've got 2 gigs of RAM allocated to minecraft, and 8 gigs total in my PC, but even still I notice my computer slow down to a crawl when this is happening. java.exe begins using nearly 90% of my CPU, and it's not a very fast one to begin with (3 GHz dual core), so basically if I want to afk at this iron farm and do something else on my computer, I have to switch to peaceful.
I am using MagicLauncher with 3 mods: the most recent OptiFine (1.6.2 HD U B4), village info and slime chunk finder (both from here: http://chunkbase.com/mods/), but I've tested with these mods disabled as well and it does the same thing, so it's not the mods. I've also been in other villages without these issues (I have a created village right near my base with just 2 villagers and 4 doors and it doesn't do this).
I'm wondering if it might be the golems, or some other issue that someone might have an idea of. It's really annoying to have to switch my game to peaceful every time I afk at this village. Any help or suggestions will be most appreciated.
8 gigs of system RAM total, 2 gigs allocated to Minecraft. 3 GHz dual core CPU, GeForce 8800 GT Superclocked GPU (512MB). Under most other circumstances I get 60 FPS, even with a hundred or so mobs in a trap.
As far as Minecraft settings, like I said I'm using MagicLauncher. Render distances is far, performance is vsync, smooth lighting is maximum, fancy fog, fancy graphics, advanced openGL is fancy, etc. Most of the settings are set to fancy or max. I've got weather turned off. If you need anything specific I can tell you, I don't want to type it all out though.
That doesn't help. You could be referring to anything from a Core Duo to an i3. We need the actual CPU model.
However, it could be just that your CPU isn't powerful enough to calculate the AI in villages effectively enough. Unless it affects gameplay that much, don't worry about it, since it seems normal.
Sorry, AMD Athlon 64 X2. It's an old CPU, I built this PC several years ago and haven't had the money to upgrade. It seems to run most games just fine though. For example, I can play Skyrim at 1920x1200 on max graphics and get at least 35-40 FPS, usually 60 though. It seems that Minecraft should run smooth as butter if the CPU can handle a game like Skyrim.

Err, no, actually, since Minecraft's performance has a huge variance based on how many entities are near where you are (among many other factors). A heavily-populated area in Minecraft may be quite a lot more demanding than Skyrim.

However, actual specs may be useful. Maybe we can help you find a way to speed up performance.
