What I've tried so far
- repeatedly erased appdata/.minecraft folder and retried
- repeatedly cleaned regisrty
- installed latest versions of 32 and 64 bit Java
- verified that the Java being used IS the 64 bit version
- verified that some game files DO get downloaded, Versions folder stays empty
- removed Stardock MyColors
- turned off realtime virus protection (Avira)
- whitelisted through firewall (not Windows - the windows firewall is disabled)
What I've noticed on a couple of attempts is that moving the cursor around the blacked out screen and clicking does result in actions - clicking links to twitter feeds etc which I assume is part of the actual login screen, wouldn't know I've never seen it yet.
What this is telling me is that everything is there, and it's waiting for me, but for some reason that window is not displaying.... is this a graphics card issue? I'm not savvy enough for that ...
As I mentioned in the original post, from what I can tell, nothing is actually "frozen", the login screen IS there, or at least all the link areas are hot, it's just not displaying properly, or it's blacked over or some other way of phrasing it.
If I move the mouse around and click randomly occasionally I hit something and a browser window opens to a twitter feed or something.... so it's all there technically, I just can't see it.
Know what I'm saying?
And yes, this is using the latest launcher online, just NOT in a browser.
Ok, so this isn't really a fix, but I ran the installer again, and tried clicking randomly around the blank screen - ideally I should find a screen cap of the login screen for reference - and managed to hit the right thing, and got playing.
Then, after playing and saving for the first time, I turned off the interwebnet, ran the installer, and was presented with a functioning button for Play Offline.
So, the issue isn't solved but I have a work around.
Hope this helps others in the same situation.
Cheers!
First, go to the Programs and Features in Control Panel (Add and Remove Programs on XP). Uninstall everything that says Java in the name. Then, go to http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp re-install Java.

Wait, "install Minecraft", is starting the login screen? The black screen is over-layed so to speak on the login screen. Because I never get to actually see it, I don't know how it appears, like whether I actually complete login, but it would seem that my random clicking around the screen area does find the mark and gets things on their way. And the game plays perfectly when I get it to running, So the only real issue it would seem is displaying the login screen.

This is the blacked out login screen freeze with "loading versions" and "loading profiles".

Do you get the issue when you are playing online on the new launcher?
If so, does your computer itself hang or does Minecraft just freeze?

Sounds cool, can you walk me through that?
From what I understand, you get a black screen after you login?
Or did you get the issue before logging in?
Please reinstall Minecraft for one.
Then you need to reinstall Java.
