Call me old fashioned. But I grew up doing LAN parties of straight up "plug this in" and "dude, did you bring wires? Awe, you, didn't?! Ffttt, borrow mine." Because, yanno, LAN stood for Local Area Network - Not the kid across the states. It was the kid across the room.
So, I'm trying to do a local area network, plain and simple, where me and my boyfriend have a game in a world shared we can play together, and not have to use a patchy, sketchy program on either or any computer to do so. Both our games are legit, paid for. And we both run on a wifi local area network that shares files.
Playing games together shouldn't be brain science, and every single thing I've read is "DOWNLOAD HAMACHI"
...No.
Surely there is a HAMACHI-FREE way of LAN play for this. (:
Anyone know where to begin looking?

As long as you both are on the same network/domain, you should be able to connect to eachothers' LAN Worlds. In-game, press Esc, then click Open to LAN (while in the world), then give the other person the IP of your computer, and the port Minecraft gives you.
Example: *.*.*.*:**** (the *s stand for random numbers.)
Open a Command Prompt by pressing Ctrl + R and typing "cmd" and hitting enter. Then when it's done loading, type
ipconfig
and it should show you your IPv4 address.
So when the other person goes to join your world, they go into Multiplayer, Direct Connect/Add Server, and put this as the ip: your IPv4 address, then a : (colon) and the port Minecraft gives you.
And none of that is necessary if you are on the same network and have your firewall configuration right.
It just works. You open to LAN, the other guy sees your game pop up on their screen, and you join.
Just a thought. If you are at college, you are probably on the schools wifi. Schools typically have several routers in each building. Make sure that you are connected to the same router, which can be difficult because they all probably have the same name. I had a huge issue like this trying to set up my wifi printer,
