Depending upon your GPU & drivers, Advanced Open GL can hurt your performance. You should try it on and off and stick with whatever works best for you.
Minecraft is an Open GL game. It's also very 3D intensive, more so than many games that look fancier since it has to calculate and render an arbitrary world

Anyway, you could also allocate Minecraft more memory (MORE!) and check that it's actually allocated properly (As you say, if it's 2GB allocated) by pressing F3 while in-game to bring stats. Memory is in top-right corner. Just check the number in brackets (Next to allocated) and check it's around 2000. Otherwise, close any other running programs (Steam and Skype are worst) and put the render distance on Short. Just in case you didn't know, there are a LOT of other setting to be changed to get best FPS out of Minecraft. I.E:
Clouds: Off
View Bobbing: Off
VSync: OFF OFF OFF TO THE DEATH
Particles: Minimal
Performance: Max FPS
Server Textures: Off

IntelR Core i7
8 GB Ram (2 GB allocated)
Latest Java and it's a 64-bit.
(I think I included everything you need to know)
I can run every other game I have like BF3 with great FPS but not minecraft. Is it because of it being an OpenGL game?
