Hey, I have been playing minecraft with the new launcher since 1.6 came out, but never got this issue. Just today I was trying to get eclipse to work so I could learn to code plugins, but I couldn't get it to work, so I gave up. Now, when I try to open minecraft, I get this error:
The registry refers to a nonexistent Java Runtime Environment installation
or the runtime is corrupted.
The system cannot find the path specified.
Could someone tell me what I need to do to make this work? I think I will need to uninstall java and try to re-install it again. But could someone verify that?
Out of curiosity, did you set up the path variable (and do it correctly)? Because that sounds like what tedster is thinking is the issue, and it is a hell of a lot faster than trying reinstall java.
But if you want to go with the whole reinstall route, I suggest you download and use revo uninstaller to remove java. It can be used to do a more through uninstall and prevent annoying registry errors later. Here is the link:

I don't know the path I need.
There should be no need to manually edit the PATH yourself.
Re-installing Java properly should solve the case, you can see that section in this article here.
