I've googled my issue and looked through some of the forum and haven't found anything exactly like it, but have probably not been as thorough as I could have been, so I apologize if I'm reposting an issue. Also, please bear with me, as I don't know computers all that well and this is my first time asking for help in this forum.
Quick history (not sure if this stuff would matter): I bought minecraft about two weeks ago, played it with no issues until two days ago, when I tried to full screen out of curiosity and only got the black screen. Uninstalled minecraft by deleting everything in the Application Support folder except for my saves, and reinstalled it. I pulled it up to make sure that it was not longer stuck on full screen, but didn't actually play. The next time I tried to play, the game glitched and lagged such that I couldn't pick up items that were mined or dropped, chests would open once and then not close (if they opened at all), and mobs were frozen. Sounds and my ability to move or look around were not affected. Sometimes when something was mined it would fall apart before simply appearing back in place as if had never been destroyed. I reinstalled the game twice, restarted my computer both times, and am still having the issue. Note that I have kept the same saved world throughout.
Minecraft isn't actually crashing, so I'm assuming there's no crash log to give. If I'm wrong, please correct me and let me know how to go about getting the information necessary.
I'm using a 2011 Macbook running OS X 1.6.8
My java version is 1.6.0 64-bit
If any more information is needed, please let me know, and I'll do my best to provide it. Thank you!
Create a new world and see if the issue persists on that world too.
Frustratingly enough, the new world I created seems to be okay so far, but my original world is still glitched. I'd only been playing for two weeks, but it's still annoying that I'll probably have to start over.
Alongside - that doesn't seem to be correct, are you sure that is the actual version you are running?
This is what I get when I run java -version on terminal:
java version "1.6.0_51"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_51-b11-457-10M4509)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.51-b01-457, mixed mode)
Thank you both for your help, but I'm thinking it's just that world that's glitched for whatever reason. If you think it might be something else, let me know. I don't want this to happen to another world I make
Your world might have become corrupt, which occasionally happens. You can try to repair it with MCEdit. With Minecraft closed, open the offending world in MCEdit, press 'ctrl-i' and select 'Repair regions' in the dialogue which pops up. Once this has completed, save your world and exit MCEdit. To download MCEdit, go to http://www.mcedit.net/ and choose the version appropriate for your OS.

Thank you, this worked!
