Umm, I am not sure about what are you talking about.
Basically, if you played on 1.5.2, you can use 1.6.2 to open the save files, though if you use 1.6.2 and downgrade to 1.5.2, anything that is from 1.6.2 will dissappear.
Also, upgrading for much older versions like Alpha or Beta may corrupt your world.
There are some versions that use old save storage, which limit the amount of the saves. I don't think you can use the saves from that versions in newer versions.
Chaning versions will automatticly make it so you can use your save files.
