I just recently tried to install Minecraft on a new system, and I was dissapointed to see that I am unable to load even the launcher.
Current specs:
AMD Phenom II X4 955
16GB RAM
Windows 8
JRE 7u25 (1.7.0_25-b17)
I tried:
Reinstalling Java
Deleting .minecraft and restarting launcher
Redownloding the launcher
Running the launcher in compatibilty mode, with admin rights, or with both
Restarting the launcher after it hangs
If I restart the launcher after resmon shows that it's finished downloading, it comes to this screen:
The GUI is completely unresponsive, the various controls do not highlight when the cursor is hovered over them.
I did note that there are no .jar files downloaded to the versions folder - obviously this is an issue, though I suspect that the issue is something else.
I did, but I uninstalled it after seeing an issue with this elsewhere on the forums. The launcher does seem to revert to an odd look, though - Aero Basic I believe.

Even if you may have uninstalled it, certain files or binaries of the custom will interfere with the launcher. Make sure every reminisce of the theme is removed.

Duly noted. It was a single DLL which loaded to provide transparency to window borders. I configured it to not load any more. Following that, I rebooted my computer. The DLL is no longer loaded. The problem persists.
On a hunch, I set my theme back to the standard Windows 8 theme - i.e., no custom wallpaper or window color. The launcher was in the background at the time, and this brought up the login menu. However, once logged in, the issue still occured.
I helped a friend who had either the same or a very similar problem. Apparently you can't have any special characters in your computer name. He had a hyphen so that caused java to hang up. Also we turned off all graphic features and set it to classic for good measure. I hope this helps.
.jar launcher exhibits the same issue.
No special characters in the computer name - although a hyphen isn't generally considered a "special character".
Java for mc only accepts letters and numbers in the computer name. It labels everything else as a special character. Also, I'm sorry that it didn't solve your issue.
No problem.
I'm still baffled as to why the launcher doesn't want to load - AFAIK I've run MC on this exact same setup before, except with the old launcher.
I should note that MC currently runs on a 10+ year old laptop (on minimum settings), yet it can't seem to handle a modern desktop PC.
