I didn't have these issues before, on 1.5.2. I now seem to get disconnected with the message "end of stream error" and while I am actually connected it is lagging so bad it's barely playable. I am not sure 100% that this is a Minecraft issue and not an issue with my router, as my daughter has this same issue on the laptop she uses (I'm on a desktop). I've made sure we are both running current versions of Java also, and no mods.
Called my cable provider (Time Warner now), everything looks good with my connection.
Only thing I can figure is it's possibly my router, I have a Linksys router (Cisco), not sure of the model # right now (at work), but will look for a firmware update for it tonight. I'll also try a different server just to see if that is the cause.
No one else on the server I play on has these issues. I'm cabled to the router, my daughter connects to it via wireless, but when it drops us, it does it to both of us at the same time, same error for both of us.
If installing new firmware doesn't fix it, I'll try to direct connect to the modem, if that doesn't do it I'll look at what software is running on both machines and try uninstalling, but still, that would be a long shot since we both get dc'd at the same time with the same error.
If anyone else has this issue, what is your router and cable provider?

Just to make sure its not your internet/connection go to speedtest.net and post your ping, download and upload.
I feel its pretty obvious that when you say lag you mean FPS lag.
Do you have a graphics card? If you know all your computer specifications and you could post them here it would be of great help.
I use Rogers as my internet provider and have a rogers router. I have no problem connecting to servers.
