Hello all,
I recently created an account here, just to post here.
Some things you should know first:
Other people come to me for tech help, and I guess I'm considered the fixer-upper when it comes to computers, and this is frustrating because I am completely dumbfounded.
This is on (obviously) vanilla Minecraft 1.6.2.
I have un- and re-installed Java multiple times.
I have deleted my .minecraft folder multiple times.
I have gotten multiple launchers, even the 1.5.2 launcher. None work.
My specs: CPU: AMD Phenom X4 9750 Quad-Core "Agena" @2.4GHz RAM: 7GB (3x2GB + 1x1GB) Samsung DDR2 Memory (don't remember technical specs) GPU: Galaxy Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 GC 2GB Drives:
Samsung 840 Series 120GB SSD
WD Blue 320GB HDD
H/L DVD/RW+CD/RW Drive
TEAC Floppy Drive PSU: Thermaltake 650W Case (not important but I'll include it anyways): Rosewill THOR V2 White Edition OS: Windows 8 Pro x64
The Issue:
So I've had Windows 8 for about 2 months now, and it's all fine and dandy. I installed minecraft at the beginning, after installing Java and all of the prereqs. The game played just fine. I could do everything just fine, play singleplayer and on servers. The new launcher rolled around, and Minecraft still worked fine. Then in the latter half of July, stuff started not working.
When I opened the launcher, it'd start, then freeze at this:
It would become non-responsive, I couldn't click the other tabs like Development Console, or anything. NOTHING WAS WORKING. I could still highlight and click the Minimize, Maximize, and Close buttons, but nothing except Minimize did anything. I had to go to Task Manager and end the process (javaw.exe) to get it to close. And another weird thing that happens every time I do this: My computer becomes SLOW (windows taking a few seconds to open/close/minimize, etc., programs loading slowly, etc. etc.), but when I check Task Manager, javaw.exe is only using >200MB of my memory and >50% of my CPU. Even Task Manager itself is ridiculously slow and unresponsive.
So, if anyone can help me out with this, it would be very appreciated. I will answer any questions to the best of my ability.
Thanks in advance.
IDK. I am getting the same thing, I have a amd dual core processor running at 2.4ghz and 8gb if ram and it has always worked perfect! Than this past week javaw.exe started using up 100% of my cpu and minecraft will not play. If i find anything out about this i will make sure and full you in.
I helped a friend who had either the same or a very similar problem. Apparently you can't have any special characters in your computer name. He had a hyphen so that caused java to hang up. Also we turned off all graphic features and set it to classic for good measure. I hope this helps. (posted on another but, thought I'd share here too since i looked for answer here as well)
My wife's PC had this problem and it's baffling since you don't get any kind of log this early in the launcher process.
I'm in IT so I got out trusty old procmon.exe and ran this on the java.exe process and it showed a lot of accesses to C:\Windows\fonts starting with many fonts starting with A then B, then the process moved on, and the java thread exited.
So I asked my wife did you install fonts recently?
Yeah like a pack of 100 fonts, well checked the font folder those hundred fonts including bold and variations turned out to be 5000 lol
So I sorted by date and removed most of the ones she added recently, and once the font count was in a reasonable number, we restarted the launcher and all was well.
Really hope this helps someone else.

I let it sit there for an hour. Still, nothing.
