NOTE! I know this problem happens with unmodified clients too!
So I believe ever since 1.5 came around, this problem has occured. Servers commonly have colored or formatted signs at their spawn points, sometimes they appear shaded and it can't be read. If I remember correctly 1.5 featured a new lighting engine. Perhaps this has something to do with it. I took a screenshot to show what I mean. Does anyone else have this issue?
