So I was playing minecraft and getting like 40 - 50 fps and I noticed that I hadn't installed optifine yet. So I downloaded it and proceeded to follow a tutorial on youtube of how to install it for this stupid launcher, but I changed my 0.6.2 file (I should have used notepad++ but the idiot in the tutorial said change it to a .txt file) to a notepad file and now I can't change it back to a .json file. It remains as a .txt file and now I can't install any mods what so ever. It's quite annoying. I restored my computer to before I did this but it didn't change the file back. I'm on windows 8 if that helps. If I right click and click open with, there is not option for .json

PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!
well. You weren't supposed to convert to .txt. That person was an idiot. If you open it with winrar than you again change the file extension that is shown in it back to .json then it will fix.
How did you change it to a txt file? Why can't you change it back the same way?
On Windows, if it is an "unknown" file extension, it shows the extension in the name. After you change it to a known file extension, the extension disappears from the name so you can't just rename it back.
Somewhere in folder options there's a way to show all file extensions, which would allow you to rename it.
I used something called regedit and set all .json files back to default and restarted my computer but for some reason it remains as any file but .json
I'm really hoping that they bring the old launcher back.
Delete your versions folder and redownload it.
If you tried to load a world after you changed the .json file, it will be corrupted, sorry to say. This is why you do backups all the time.
At least, that worked for me.

It's not a problem with the launcher. It's a problem with the user. Oh yes, and with windows trying to be helpful.
There was never any reason to change the file extension. You just needed to open the .json file with a decent text editor. (Right click-> Open With)
To make windows stop being 'helpful' and start being useful. Go to the Start->Control Panel-> Folder Options-> View Tab -> Uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types" -> Hit OK [This is for Win 7, other Windows versions are similar but different]
Unfortunately nothing works. I haven't played Minecraft since this happened, so I guess i'll just wait for a new launcher without a .JSON file. Thank you everyone.

I don't believe you tried my option, which was to delete the version folder and force the launcher to redownload. I'm telling you this because Mojang will NOT be updating the old launcher nor creating a JSON-free launcher.
Dino it turns out that the file is already .json. It doesn't matter what format it is. When you click on profile and click ''use version'' You have to scroll down and you should see it say ''release whatever'' If that doesn't work msg me.

And the other method when I opened winrar didn't even allow me to open it, Thanks for your help.

There aren't. You could attempt simply deleting the version folder and running the game to redownload.
