I just updated my MC client to 1.6.2 after the Private server I usually play on did the same. The new launcher/console works great, but the "game window" (what you actually play the game in) has issues, but only in 1.6+ mode. If I edit the profile to load either 1.5.1 or 1.5.2, the game windows works without a single issue.
Now that we've established the specifics of which version are causing greaf, let me describe the issue itself (if I can - it's sort of wierd). When log in and the console window opens and I hit the Play button, the game window opens, and the problems begin. Quite frequently, but randomly, the window "flickers", and I notice in the taskbar that the icon for the game window "replaces itself" (e.g. it's like the window closes and re-opens extremely quickly). When this happens, the game window loses focus in the OS. this wreaks havoc when trying to enter a new private server, or creating a new world, as every text field on the current screen reverts to it's default state, forcing me to start over. If I'm lucky enough to get everything filled in I'm still out of luck, as the button that needs to be clicked ("done", "create new world", etc.) are "ghosted out", and are not clickable.
If I change the profile to use 1.5.{whatever}, I can add server info, or create a new world, and these are accessible in 1.6+ mode, but on entering said world/server, gameplay is jerky and slow. This is because of the screen losing focus (and therefore the controls "going dead"), rather than any lag issues. If I try to tough it out, and continue playing, I often die, and god help me when this happens, because I can click neither the respawn nor title screen buttons.
Ok, now that I've described the problem, let me list what I've tried to correct it:
1.) Wipe all but the saves folder and retry
2.) Run Minecraft.exe as admin
3.) Update Java to JRE 7_25
4.) Roll back Java to JRE 7_10
5.) Install 64 bit Java JRE 7_25
6.) Re-download minecraft.exe, directly from Mojang's link
7.) Repeat steps 1 & 2
8.) Verify having the latest video drivers
9.) Roll back drivers to version 2 levels below
I've looked through the console logs, and see nothing out of the ordinary. I'm a programmer (though not in Java) so I know how to read a log file. The game always has an exit code of 0, and no mention of any errors or warnings are listed in the colsole logs.
I can't think of anything else to try, so I figured it was time to call for help.
