What I have: Toshiba Satellite L455D-S5976 Windows 7 OS with SP1 and current updates AMD Sempron SI-42 2GB RAM 250 Gb HDD
No extra special anything, basically a run of the mill walmart special.
What I did first...
I sought help here and most recommended I uninstall some sort of driver... it actually caused more problems than what it's worth doing... DO NOT TRY THIS UNLESS WHAT I INSTRUCT YOU ON HERE DOES NOT WORK!
What I did next...
Went to a local tech/geek.
He did several things and got MC to work. Then it stopped working and I did everything he did again.
What the tech did...
These are all fixes you can do on your pc without even deleting or uninstalling a thing. You just got to know what to click and this is quite easy... I'm only more PC savvy than most random people... and only fancy myself a Geek wannabe, so hopefully this works... if not, I tried...
Created a New Profile or Account
I did this because my main Admin is the more secure profile and my kid doesn't need to be messing with the security if he wants to play MC. I created a basic, non-admin profile to start. You can set a password if you like. I didn't, but it may be a good idea so the kids don't mess up something they shouldn't.
My new Account, I called Games. The rest, I did after this step.
Also, when I got the laptop I have, I renamed the profile and that was part of the reason why MC wouldn't load on it. Never realized this simple little issue caused most of this...
Changed the Network Settings
Go to Start, then click Control Panel, then click Network and Internet (or Network and Sharing Center) You will see what you are connected to. Click on the Network you have in the "View Active Networks" section of this screen and in the window that pops up, click Home. Click Close when it confirms your selection.
Disabled My Preferred Firewall
I use Zonealarm Free Firewall. Very secure... you should try it sometime... I right-clicked on the icon on the Taskbar (the area near the clock with all the little icons near it) and in the menu that popped up, I clicked Exit.
Then, I enabled Windows Firewall and allowed it to run with its Default settings. Don't leave yourself completely unprotected.
Disabled My Antivirus
(Pardon the paranoia, but I have had my pc infected before and nearly lost everything. Backup everything you wanna keep to CD, DVD, and/or flashdrive often just in case. Ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure...)
Right-clicked my Antivirus Icon and in the little menu that popped up, I clicked Disable Permanently.
I have Windows Defender running in its place also on default settings.
Changed the Setting on CCleaner
CCleaner is a nice, simple program that will take off a lot of virtual garbage that collects from gaming, browsing, and other activities.
I only loaded this program and de-selected Java in the menu of items to clean. Seems to help because I have ran it since.
============================
In conclusion, these fixes are quite easy, but most of us look for some other fix-all that may actually harm the pc. Keep your antivirus and firewall up to date and an anti spyware program like malwarebytes, superantispyware or spybotSD (search and destroy)... ALL FREE TO USE, might I add... things will work fine.
Drop a message and let me know if this did or did not help. I'll try to get advice from my uncle's geek buddy and post other helpful tips when I can.
To those of you who tried to help me... thanks, though it didn't work. Your efforts were appreciated nevertheless.
To those of you who ragged on what my laptop is... had nothing to do with the make and model... just too secure of programming due to my paranoia. I came here for help instead got heckled... ever think some of us can't afford top of the line stuff and can only get the cheaper models? Hm? Took almost a year of wanting to get the game card to even start playing for me. I'm poor... so I have to take what I can get... and I enjoy what I have.
