Ok so I just recently got minecraft 1.5.2 and everything was going great it was running good no problems and then I started seriously playing, and like most people I have a movie or tv show running as I am mining or whatever.
Well recently I have noticed this horrible lag that is for almost always exactly 5 minutes long, during this period my normal 30 to 36 fps goes to 2 to 10 fps and you can't do anything to fix it, restarting minecraft doesn't help, and the lag is over the whole computer so it is not just the game, but everything lags. Worst of all if I quit minecraft the lag continues.
Though after the 5 minutes it stops and everything returns to normal, it randomly happens and when it starts it usually continues to happen every 10 to 20 minutes after. So I can be playing it for hours then suddenly bam super lag for as long as I am still playing.
Now when I play with no other window it takes longer to lag like 45 to 60 minutes in between.
I really have no idea how to fix this I have put the video options to lowest settings and told task manager to give minecraft more memory, but nothing seems to help and this is the first time I have ever had a problem with a game on my computer. Also it is an offline computer.
One thing that kind of helps is hitting F3 and F like 14 to 20 times, but that only reduces the lag a bit.
Ran an Chkdsk error check and an sfc /scannow. Just made things worse my frame speed is up to 100+, but now it is maybe 4 minute in between 5 minute lags.
Try going into your Task Manager while Minecraft is running, right click > go to process (or go to details if Windows 8), then right click the process > set affinity, uncheck all but one core, then set the priority to high.
