Ever since I started using the new launcher even with 3 gigs of ram allocated I still have lag problems.
My computer is a windows 8 asus k55a laptop with intel core i5 processor with 4 gigs of ram. I used to be able to run minecraft fine with low settings but now I cant run it very well.

Minecraft doesn't need 3 gigs of RAM to run. If anything you're going to slow the game down allocating that much from paging.
Let the launcher allocate the default amount of RAM that it wants to, and see if that helps.
