Alright, so I have several problems with version 1.6.2. I never had any problems with any previous version, and I'm willing to bet all my current issues stem from the same problem. I'm playing the Mac Version on Snow Leopard.
The new Launcher loads very slowly. When I first open it, lines of code (or something, I'm not a programmer) load across the window, then after 10ish seconds, the laucher will open. I'll take another 10ish seconds to load my profile. Then when I hit play it jumps over to the Development tab and more code has to load. Sometimes the game loads in about a minute, but a some times it has taken over an hour. It happens every time I try to play.
Once the game launches, if I try to make the window bigger by dragging the corner (as I always did in previous versons), the game will freeze and crash consistantly. It does work if I go into settings and play fullscreen, but I'd rather play with a big window than fullscreen.
When I try to load my game, it will be "Downloading Terrain" for usually 1-3 minutes.
Once it loads, only the chunck that my character is on will load. If I go to the edge of the chunck, I just fall off and die.
I went back to playing via the old launcher, and I had no loading issues, however the same issue with the chunks happened. In that version, they will very slowly load if I wait, but at a speed witch is very unreasonable to actually play the game.
I've never had any issues prior to this update, not even lag.

Edit 2: I now realize that only my "main" world (survival) has the problems loading the chuncks. Other games I load work fine, but this actually terrifies me more as I have invested hundreds and hundreds of hours into this world.

Well, it seems like the chunks not loading has to do with your world being outdated. As for the launcher, I think we just have to deal with it for now.
What exactly does this mean? I don't think minecraft worlds become outdated. Also, the others that I try that do work were created around the same time.

Excuse my late response, but what I meant by your world "being outdated" was it being made before the last/couple of patches.
