So once upon a time, not too long ago my Minecraft worked perfectly! With and without any mod my heart desired to install. Then one day for no reason at all, my Minecraft decided to get really quiet and would no longer speak to me anymore.
No matter how many times I would attempt to restart Minecraft, or adjust/check all available sound settings through Minecraft and my computer itself it was to no avail. Minecraft was just simply done communicating with me on an audio level.
I have tried running a vanilla Minecraft, I have tried continuing to run a modded Minecraft.. However no matter what I attempt to try, Minecraft will just not speak to me anymore. I even tried basically reinstalling by letting all required files in .minecraft folder to regenerate, but still no luck.
I do not understand why Minecraft now decides not to share with me anymore, I have made no changes at all since when it was working fine before hand. I know it's specifically Minecraft and not my computer because any other game or audio function produces sound on unchanged computer volume.
I have tried updating/replacing files before the file regeneration (these files didn't regenerate after deletion however) so I am led to believe that these files are no longer used in the newer version of Minecraft anymore. Sometimes I get really lucky and I'll get a few seconds of sound but then it will immediately cut out. No door sounds, no animal sounds, no explosions, no footsteps... I am quite upset by this as it leaves me playing in silence and that tends to bother me after a while.

Minecraft likes to do that. Just play Minecraft for a couple of minutes, it takes time to recognise the sound files.
Have you tried deleting .minecraft altogether? Make sure to make a backup of your Saves,Modded Versions.
EDIT: Have you tried pressing F3+S In-Game?
Yes I played Minecraft for hours at a time and no sound would come.... Yes I deleted .minecraft, I said that...
I did try the F3+S, and it did give me sound. Though at this time I am unsure how long it will last? What exactly did that do? As I didn't press it at any time before when my sound would work for a few seconds and then not.

I'm having the same problem. Back up your .minecraft folder and reinstall it with a 1.5 launcher. The only thing that's worked for me so far is playing on the 1.5 launcher.

I don't even use the default Minecraft launcher when I run the game... o.o; The F3+S worked to get the sound working for me on 1.6.2, and so far no problems with it cutting out again. Problem i have now is I don't know what it did/triggered to get it working...
I'm not the kind to go "okay that worked!" I wanna know how and why too...

Turns out the F3+S is NOT permanent for me. Atleast not between restarts of Minecraft. I really hate having to do this every time I play, it's only a temporary solution this way. I'd like something more permanent.

I am having a similar problem: I can only use F3+S to fix the sound or switch resource packs after playing for a couple minutes. I can't seem to find a permanent solution. Also, have you ever used zombe's mod pack? Because that's when I've noticed I had run into sound problems just after I have installed that mod.
