I recently tried to update my girlfriend's minecraft file to the horse update, and it successfully updated the file. When I attempted to open the game with the new launcher for 1.6, though, it failed. Her previous version was a variant of 1.5. Her system is a Macbook OS X Version 10.6.8. I put it through a system update to attempt to update java. I don't know if the system update did update java, but the update was successful. I also uninstalled and reinstalled minecraft, keeping the saves folder safe outside of the file while I uninstalled. The reinstalled minecraft also doesn't work.
Here is the dev console error message:

I've been trying to fix this for a couple of hours via google. No luck so far. The native file number seems to change every time.
So I've done some more research today. She's running snow leopard still, and consequently she only is able to use the most recent update of java 6. Could this be contributing to the issue? Does she need to update to mountain lion to resolve this issue?
I'm not much of an expert on this, but it probably is an issue with Java or one of the game files (liblwjgl.jnilib) not being able to load. I'd recommend trying to do what xXMCPro said. I hope this is helpful.
I had the same problem. No, she does not need to update infact 10.6.8 is the update you need to what I'm about to tell you, download this on her computer http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1573
