A while back (while on the 1.5.2 update) Minecraft stopped running on my Windows 8 Microsoft Surface Pro. The launcher would start, but as I pressed "play" it would go black and shut down.
As I was in the mids of my final exams in my final year before "collage" I did not have the time to deal with it. Now after coming back from a week of vacation I decided to try the 1.6.1 update to see if the problem had been fixed. Alas, that was not the case.
Now, when trying to play the game through the new launcher, the window for Minecraft pops up, but immediately closes down again. After the message "---- YOU CAN CLOSE THIS LAUNCHER IF THE GAME STARTED OK ----" pops up in the launcher feed, I get this error message (see "spoiler")
---- YOU CAN CLOSE THIS LAUNCHER IF THE GAME STARTED OK ----
---- YOU CAN CLOSE THIS LAUNCHER IF THE GAME STARTED OK ----
---- YOU CAN CLOSE THIS LAUNCHER IF THE GAME STARTED OK ----

On the plus side, Minecraft still works on my Winows 8 Pro Notebook PC without a hitch (and 1.6.1 works fine)
Any help is appreciated
SOLVED:
I installed a 64-bit version of Java and now it works (I did not unistall the 32-bit version, as its needed to run certain browsers... at least thats what the Java website tells me)

Retired StaffI have the latest version of Java (version 7 update 15) so that shouldn't be the problem
Edit: update 25, not 15
