After getting Minecraft 1.6's new launcher, I've been having lag issues. When there are a large amount of mobs nearby, I get block lag (broken blocks taking a while to disappear and placed blocks taking a while to appear) and movement lag. I was placing a wall around a village and removing their inefficient farms to make room for new ones when I noticed this lag. I saw several zombies nearby, which I was prepared for, so I killed a couple and the lag improved. I switched the game to peaceful, causing all zombies to disappear and the game to run very smoothly. This is a new issue, as I have had Minecraft since Beta and never had this issue before. For the moment, I just kill all mobs in the area when I notice the lag build up as I try to build, but a long term fix would be nice. Will a bug fix be released to remedy this?
I also have this problem with block lag near villages. It also causes mobs to move very slowly, as they take exactly two steps then stop, then take two more steps then stop, and so on. They move literally 2 (two) steps, that is not an idiom or exaggeration.
I have 1.6.2 now and I just tested setting the game to peaceful mode. Peaceful mode stops the block lag entirely near a village.
I wonder if the problem is the pathfinding algorithm running for all zombies 40 blocks away from the player and 40 blocks from any villager.
Hey, I have similar problem but not eaxctly what you said(becauase I'm sure I kill most mobs close to me). It happened while I was building my house ( it has many redpower items but I don't think there's muuh enough to make lag issue). And I go back try Minecraft 1.5.2. It's ok without lag any more. But back to 1.6.2, it bothered me again and again, especially when I walked close to my building .
After experimenting with the optifine mod, i have found that it does increase minecraft fps. after having 11-15 fps, i now get 20-40 but still get lag. Mojang definitely needs to fix this problem because I have stopped playing minecraft because of the bad fps. I won't be recommending this game any more to any of my friends until they fix the fps drop.
Huh, I'm using 1.6.2, a few mods and optifine. I normally have 80-100 fps, but occasionally drop to 11-35 fps. WHY?

I can also confirm this lag issue is still here in 1.6.2, sadly.
If I play on anything higher than Peaceful setting, it will lag if there's a lot of mobs nearby, as stated, especially near a village. On Hard mode (especially if there's an entire group of zombies attacking), it will lag around once per second, like a ticking issue. You can look at the stars in the sky and especially notice it there, because they will jerk across the sky instead of moving smoothly.
This is something that desperately needs fixing, and hopefully soon.
P.S. I've got this issue with both Optifine installed and without it. It seems to happen the most frequently with the zombies, so I do agree it's possibly an issue with their newly programed block distance.
