Can't start 1.6 or new launcher

Hi, last night I downloaded the new launcher for 1.6 and it worked when I opened it after installation. I played it for a few hours and even made coal blocks so I know it worked. This morning I clicked my minecraft desktop icon and the old launcher opened and it says I'm still on 1.5.2. I opened my game and all my coal blocks are now gone. How do I open up the new version? Do I still use the same icon to open up the new launcher?

You have to use the new Launcher to play 1.6.1. The new launcher should have a more high-resolution and brighter grass block as the icon.

I installed the new launcher already and I opened it right after installing, but it no longer opens when I click the icon. What should I do?
