So I got the 1.6.1 update, I go to play and everything is fine. You should know that I use a Mac OS X version 10.8.4. I had already updated my texture packs to resource packs using DinnerBone's TextureEnder; and decided to use A'theries Ascended. I log out using the pack, and when I log back in all the words are scrambled and cramped together on the title, in game chat, item and people's names, and signs. I switch back to the default texture pack and that's screwed up too! Saving things like my servers.dat and other things (including the resource packs), I delete my minecraft folder, proceeding to re-download minecraft, I try again with the switching packs and such but the same results happen! I realize this is an actual issue and start to test things. First I try it without switching to a pack and the game does not glitch out. Next I try re-downloading the whole launcher, but the same issue happens. Finally I re-download the texture pack, reconvert it, and try, but the same happens. I have also tried this with various other packs, but it does not help. I'm not sure if this is a problem with Texture Ender, the new update, or the new client. I'm sorry for not putting the code of the launch down but I'm not too experienced with in-depth computer things, and it won't let me post the whole thing, so if you want the code I see in the launcher then I'll have to be told where to look. Hopefully this will be fixed!
I'm having the same problem. :/ (And I'm using windows if you didn't notice by the pictures XD) I decided to convert a texture pack to the resource pack format, like you did, with the texture ender program, and it scrambled the texture pack text, as well as the original minecraft texture text. Here's a picture of what it looks like: (Let me know if it looks the same as what yours is doing)

Pretty much, do you use a converter besides TextureEnder? If so then this is a problem with the update for sure, not the converter. I can't seem to find any other converters, so if you find one could you test it?
Mine's like that too It makes it a pain to play multiplayer..... I used a resource pack and it worked fine. But later I loaded up MC again and the text was all overlapped and scrambled. Changing to the regular MC textures didn't fix it.
I have found something that can help fro now: changing your language to pirate speak fixes it so you can use your resourcepack, so if you want to use a pack but still read: get used to it meharties!
