I really love minecraft but the new launcher doesn't work! when i press play it opens of minecraft and it crashes and quit in like 2 secounds what do i do im also on a imac v10.5.8 and the codes are:

my suggestion would be to either re-install minecraft or download the snapshot launcher and open 1.6.1 release.

well im using a imac v10.5.8 would my mac be too old for a new update of java therefor i can'not play minecraft 1.6.1?

To use the new launcher, you need at least java 7, since support for java 6 and below was dropped. If your computer is too old for java 7, you may need a new computer.

5. Your Minecraft 1.6 Launcher should be working correctly.

instead of risking life and limb can i just upgrade my imac to a mac v 10.6.8 ?what i am hearing is that i should upgrade my imac to a v10.5.8 and it should work?

Well, changing the SystemVersion.plist shouldn't affect your computer; I'm worried that Java 7 itself might have a problem with 10.5.8.

Some things you should know:
- The Minecraft 1.6 Launcher requires Java 7.
- Java 7 can only be installed in Mac OS X Lion, or 10.7.3+

Changing that .plist file basically tricks your computer into thinking it's 10.7.3 instead of 10.6.8/10.5.8.

If you don't want to mess around with your computer, your only other option is to buy a new computer ($800-3000) or buy the Snow Leopard and Lion updates, which is $40.

I assume you're going to the Library in your ~/ directory?
You're looking in the wrong place. Go to Macintosh HD, System, then Library. You should find it there.

Is there a video of this becuse i have no idea of what your talking about(sory abput my lack of xp witha imac)

How could your Mac be too old for a Java update? That just doesn't make any sense to me. Have you actually tried updating it?

Apple have a control-freak issue. Maybe Java updates are locked to the updates to the OS ?

(EDIT) Short version: If you want to play games you are shooting yourself in the foot by using a mac, that's my experience anyway.

No. Don't own a Mac. I'm just saying it seems quite odd. Especially since Macs seem to try to be very versatile and highly compatible. Is it Java's fault, or is it the OS?
