Hello! Ever since I updated my Minecraft to 1.6 ever since I have updated my FPS seem to drop like crazy I use to play on Fancy settings and far distance. It says that my Average FPS is 103 but it doesn't seem like it, it says it has 103 but looks like 10 FPS
Well I have a late 2012 Imac 27" 2.9 GHZ Intel Core i5 8Gb of Ram NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M 512 MB
Alright. Now that is a beefy computer right there, you do not deserve to be experiencing this problem. lol.
I have a windows, so it's definitely not the brand's problem.
I have 8 gigs as well, and 2.9 ghz i3.
what java version? I have the jre8

Update all graphics drivers, OpenGL and java if possible/not done so yet. 1.6 came with an OpenGL update (from like 1.2 to 2.0), and a java update (jre 8 i think)

I have found a perfect solution that worked for me. I was having the exact same problem as you, but then I realized that my computer was running Minecraft with the wrong graphics processor. You need to right click on the Minecraft launcher, and hover your cursor over "Run with graphics processor" then select "Change default graphics processor..." It should bring up a window which allows you to change the graphics processor to the one your computer is supposed to use. Change it from "Integrated Graphics" to whatever one your computer is supposed to use. I think the "Change default graphics processor..." thing might only work if you have Nvidia, so if you don't have this option then just find another way to change your graphics processor. You might need to do a little google searching.
Don't know exactly how to do it on a mac but the "run graphics processor" opens the nvidia control panel which allows you to set the default graphics for each program. so if you can figure out how to get to the nvidia control panel, get to program settings and set minecraft to use the good card instead of the integrated which it is currently defaulting to.

I am also laggy on a mac, I normaly get around 40 fps but now it says I am down to 5-10
I may have a solution that MIGHT work for some, with the new 1.6 launcher, go to Profile Editor > Select your user > Check JVG Arguments > And edit -Xmx3G to how much ram you want to dedicate minecraft when you you're playing. In my case I had 1GB dedicated when I played, so I added 3GB because I have 8GB of ram.

I did this to start out, I have been running it with 2 gb and when using the profile for 1.6.1 I get around 125 fps. I switch to 1.5.2 with 2 gb and I still get 5-10 fps
